Medical exams for cruise ship gigs
Dear musicians,
To work on a cruise ship you must pass a medical exam. How detailed this exam is depends on the cruise line that has offered you a job. Some include detailed blood analysis, drug tests, chest x-rays, detailed medical questionnaire and more. Some cruise lines require that your Body Mass Index (BMI) is below 35.
Being in good general health is thus important and we want to make sure our clients are aware of this policy so they won’t be surprised later.
Some musicians are asking whether they can get a medical exam done before they are offered a gig on a cruise ship. This, however, does not make much sense since all of these cruise lines have different medical exam procedures. Wait until you’ve been offered a job to get a yours done. At that point we’ll be able to give you detailed instructions and provide you with the correct forms.
Once completed, the medical results are typically valid for 2 years.
It’s also important to note that the exams are at your cost. Some cruise lines reimburse a part of the costs to you once on board the ship, some don’t.
If you have any questions about medical exams, let us know.

Stewart,
This is something that the cruise line’s medical department would have to decide after they’ve reviewed the doctor’s medical exam.

i am asthmatic, have been for 22years i am currently 24 yrs old. my asthma is under control and well managed. i am able to do any activities a non asthmatic person does as i take daily preventatives. i have seen asthma disqualifies employment, is this still the case even if it well controlled???

As I stated above, we’re not deciding on whether someone is fit for work or not, that’s the job of the medical department at the cruise line who will base their decision on the medical exam your doctor has conducted.
In general, we’ve had clients with certain pre-existing, well-controlled conditions that have worked on cruise lines for many years. However, we’ve also had people turned down by a cruise line because of certain conditions and despite the fact that they were under control.

I recently had a heart attack but did not have open heart surgery. Instead, stents was used.
What is my chance on getting on board as musicians?
Thank you,
Patrick

We’ll give you the medical form the cruise line requires and you’ll take that to either a doctor of your choice or a pre-approved doctor, depending on which cruise line you’ll get a job with.
Once the doctor has signed the form and the lab tests have been completed, you’ll submit all the forms to us and we’ll get the cruise line to approve it.

Cheryl,
As you can see from our website, we hire musicians only. You would have to find yourself an agency that places medical staff on ships.
Good luck.

Cheryl,
The medical departments at cruise lines look over all applicants medical exam results and determine whether or not they are fit for work. We merely help applicants collect their paperwork and submit it to the cruise line.

Would mild well managed depression be a problem if you were going to be on the staff?

Debbie,
The medical departments at the cruise lines determine who’s fit for duty based on your medical exam results.
