Roz Savage, the ocean rower, on her way home

August 29, 2009

Dear Musicians,

On June 2nd, we posted a quick note about Roz Savage, the courageous woman who’s rowing across the Pacific to raise awareness to the pollution of our oceans. She’s been at Sea for 97 days now and is getting ready to make landfall around September 9th. This is an exciting event and you can follow it all on her blog rozsavage.com.

There you can find information about the adventure, her mission and what you can do to help. I’m sure you’ll find it inspiring.

Here’s a movie that sums up who she is and what she does.

Roz Savage rows yet again

June 2, 2009

Dear musicians,

Roz Savage, the inspiring ocean rower is doing it again. The woman who rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in 2005 is now underway on the second leg of her row across the Pacific. She completed the first leg, from San Francisco to Hawaii in 2008 and is now on Day 9 of her adventure.

roz

Roz is doing this to raise awareness to the pollution of our oceans. Her message is quite simple: To tell all of us that we can make a difference. But it’s much easier for you to hear this directly from the source. Roz is maintaining a site, complete with podcasts, photos, movies, blogs etc. All of this while she’s rowing. You can follow her on twitter as well.

Go Roz.

Oceanbound Entertainment Inc. plants trees

November 17, 2008

Oceanbound Entertainment Inc. has made a small donation to have 1,000 trees planted.

You may ask yourself what this has to do with music on cruise ships and what the big deal is?

Well, it is not a big deal and yet it is. We at Oceanbound Entertainment Inc. believe that all of us ought to pitch in to reverse some of the harm that has been done to our planet. We consider these thousand trees only the beginning of our commitment and we’ll keep you informed on future developments.

Cruise ships pollute the air and do some harm to our oceans even though cruise lines are working hard to minimize their negative impact. The cruise industry is doing well in part because passengers want to enjoy pristine beaches, fresh air and the magnificent sea creatures that inhabit our oceans. If we can keep it that way our future generations will be thankful and our business will benefit greatly.

Trees for the future is the company that is planting trees around the world with your donations. They are doing a marvellous job and we commend them for their work.

Below is a short video about the company.

New speed limits for cruise ships to protect whales

October 10, 2008

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmonsperic Administraion (NOAA) issued a new regulation on October 8th, 2008 that will set a new speed limit for large ships to protect whales.

Slow moving whales are in danger of colliding with large cruise ships as they come up for air. The new rule was set to protect the North Atlantic Right Whale, of which only 300 to 400 still exist. Large ships are supposed to reduce their speed to 10 knots in areas where these whales breed.

Ships’ owners and/or captains can also set reduced voluntary speeds if three whales or more are sighted in areas where the above rule is not in effect.

Roz rows the Pacific

Dear Musicians,

I believe that working on a cruise ship is a wonderful job. It’s a great way to get exposed to places you’d never have the chance of seeing without spending a lot of cash and it’s a great way to be out on the Ocean and enjoy its beauty.

But no matter how you slice it, cruise ships are not good for the environment despite their owner’s constant efforts to improve the situation. Ships use an enormous amount of fuel for propulsion and thus blow large quantities of exhaust fumes in the air. Ships’ anchors destroy coral reefs and the enormous consumption of goods on the ships produce large quantities of garbage which eventually end up in land fills.

If we want to enjoy our oceans for years to come we should be aware of what’s happening to our oceans so that we can help to clean up after ourselves and change our behavior.

Roz Savage is rowing solo across the Pacific as we speak to exactly this. With her courageous feat, she’s attempting to raise awareness about the state of our oceans.

You can learn all about her on her website rozsavage.com. Roz points out the large amounts of plastic items that float around the ocean which are consumed by marine mammals, sea turtles and seabirds. As a matter of fact there is an area the size of Texas in the middle of the Pacific where waste plastic accrues, gathered by ocean currents.

Here is one of Roz’s movies that you can find on youtube.

Roz has a lot of interesting information on her site about the things you can do to help clean up our Oceans and to how to avoid making matters worse. Check it out.

I also want to point out that Roz has entered a competition with American Express that would get her some much needed cash if won. You can go here to vote for her adventure to be rewarded.

Let’s all do a small part to preserve our beautiful planet.
